Product: Vivid Glow Purple for iPhone 4/4S Wrap

Company: Slickwraps
URL: www.slickwraps.com/Purple-Glow-in-the-Dark-Skin-iPhone-4S-p/sw-aip4-glowprpl.htm

Price: $24.95

Tested on: iPhone 4s

Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Apples

This review is for the Vivid Glow Purple skin/wrap for the iPhone 4/4s. This wrap is easily installed and glows in the dark bright purple after exposure to natural light, and will glow white for 8 or more hours after exposure to indoor light. The skin protects the phone's back and edges from dust, dirt and scratches.

After receiving this iPhone 4s wrapper from Slickwraps, I opened it up. There were lots of pieces, including a couple little square cardboard pieces with QR codes and a web address for installation. There were no readable installation instructions included.

Installation: After finding the instructions online, I went to iPhone 4S. There are only side instructions for the 4S (1:50), so I clicked on the iPhone 4 instructions. The video is a sped up version of someone putting the wrap on the phone (1:56). No voice, no instruction. Off to watch the 9-minute instruction for the iPhone 5 and see if that helps.

Have you ever said a word so many times that it lost all meaning, and your mouth couldn't form the word correctly anymore? I think the narrator had that problem with the word "Slickwraps" and it's getting on my nerves. Slickwraps. Slickwrraps. Sickwraps. Sickrapps. Sikrips. Quiet already! After getting over that, the video is informative and helpful. Then I watched the iPhone 4s side installation video.

Several instruction videos later I was ready to install. It actually went very well. The cleaning cloth provided cleaned off any visible finger oils without much effort. The back went on easily, it was just a fraction smaller than the back of the phone, and personally I'd rather it be a bit small than too big and catch on things. The front video showed that you can lay it down and if it isn't perfect you can just peel off and reattach, which I did. Like the back, the sides are a bit smaller than the phone, so there is a small gap between where they meet. No big deal, it's a small gap.

All in all, the installation went very smoothly. Normally I hate installing any sort of skin, but this was by far the easiest to install skin I've ever touched. Maybe it was all those videos.

The Slickwrap: As described on the website, the material is white. It's not glossy and has a slightly rough sort of feel. It felt like it would get dirty very quickly, but it stayed pretty clean for the first month, even though it is stark white.

I installed it in the morning, and used my phone normally. The first time I entered a dark area I was immediately impressed. The phone glowed Purple! I'm not just talking about a minor glow here; I'm talking about an impressive bright neon glow. Later I sat outside playing on my phone for a bit. When I went back inside it glowed brightly purple again, but was much dimmer on half of the back, where my hand was holding it. It only glows bright purple from natural light. When exposed to indoor lights it glows a greenish white glow that most glow-in-the-dark products have. Surprisingly, it does glow whiteish for 8 hours or more. This is very helpful when waking up in the middle of the night. Even when waking up in the morning if the room is still dark, the phone glows. It also glows when it's just dim out, so if you drop the phone between the couch cushions it's easier to find.

Protection: This is more of a skin than an actual case. Slickwraps, as the name describes, is a phone wrap. Therefore, it's not going to protect the inner workings of the phone from an impact but it will protect the outside of the phone from scratching and dings. I accidentally dropped the phone when getting out of the car within just a few days of getting the Slickwrap. The drop resulted in minor dings on the edge of the wrap but the phone is fine. Just as helpful, when it bounced under my neighbor's car, it was easy to grab because it was night and the phone was glowing. That took just a bit of the sting out of having dropped my phone onto pavement.

Durability: I've had the Slickwrap on my phone for about two months. I really didn't expect it to stay on so well for so long. Besides the many dings around the edges from dropping my phone multiple times, it's in very good shape and still glows for hours.

I decided to leave the Apple cutout on the back of the phone and stickers on the volume buttons even though the video shows the user removed them. The video also showed the choice of removing the sticker from the home button or keeping it; I decided to keep it. The only things that came off were the volume button stickers, which weren't supposed to stay on in the first place. They took about a month to come off. The Apple cutout and the home button stickers are still perfectly adhered.

Before putting the Slickwrap on my phone I found several comments on the Internet about the residue sticking to the phone after the Slickwrap has been removed. I am happy to report that after peeling up a section of the Slickwrap, it removed just fine. Just as Slickwrap promised, there was no messy residue after removal.

HD Screen Protector: I also received a HD screen protector for review. This costs an additional $5 for the older iPhones, but is included with the Slickwrap for the iPhone 5. If I weren't doing a review I wouldn't have bothered with the screen protector. In my experience unless you pay for an expensive, well known protector you get what you pay for; no matter how well you clean the screen there are still air bubbles and little specs of dust stuck underneath. I watched the installation video and somewhat lazily put on the screen protector (while still following the directions of using the cardboard squeegee) figuring it wouldn't come out well no matter how hard I tried. Mind blown! It went on without any bubbles or dust underneath, and the screen images are still sharp and clear. The only downfall is that it's exactly the size of the screen opening of the Slickwrap, so one corner wasn't perfect. I could have tried multiple times and I'm not sure I could have ever gotten it on perfectly. Even though I couldn't get that one corner perfect, it's been the best screen protector I've ever used.

Conclusion: I'm giving the Purple Vivid Glow Slickwrap 4.5 out of 5 Apples. Some may think that $25 for a phone wrap is pricy, but it is pretty remarkable. The Sickwrap gives the phone a nice clean look. Installation is very easy and painless. Bubbles during installation were not an issue as regular skins are. This is partly because of the thicker design of the wrap, as well as helpful and descriptive installation videos on the website. The cleaning cloth provided was enough to wipe away any oils from my fingers, and made me confident I didn't need to find another way to clean the phone before installation. The Slickwrap protects the phone from scratches and dings. Best of all, the Glow Slickwrap glows bright purple even in dim light when exposed to natural light, and glows whiteish-green when exposed to artificial, indoor light. It will glow for 8 hours making it easy to find in the middle of the night (or when you wake up an hour late for work and you realize you've lost the phone in the sheets of the bed because you kept hitting snooze on your phone alarm clock).

I've deducted half an Apple for price as mentioned above, and for color. While it is advertised that it glows bright purple, it only does that when exposed to natural light. It glows the typical glow-in-the-dark yellowish green with artificial light. White also is a poor choice. After two months of use the white has become a yellowish antique white color. IMHO I strongly discourage getting a white cover unless its use is only temporary. Unfortunately, I did not think the white would be as much of an issue as it was.
