"Hardware" Review
by Maria O. Arguello

Flip Video Ultra Product: Myvu Crystal Standard/Universal Goggles

Company: Myvu Corporation

URL: www.myvu.com/

System Requirements: iPods with video or iPhone (all models)

Test System: iPhone 3G

Price: $299.95

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 Apples

I was very eager to try Myvu video eyewear with the new cable ($24.95) adapter designed just for my iPhone. I always wanted to try one of these video goggles. It was really simple to assemble; I begin watching a video from my iPhone in no time. This very-high-tech accessory is a great idea for viewing video from an iPod or iPhone player in privacy. I hoped it would be ideally suited for viewing a movie on an airplane; it would be comfortable and private. But I was very disappointed. The glasses would not stay on very comfortably and the video resolution was fuzzy unless I held them with one hand in a particular position. This was most tiring after awhile.

It seems my face and my ears are not suited for this standard type of eyewear. They are gorgeously designed, but they are not for me. Even the ear buds did not fit although they come with three different-size tips to fit many people. This is not the fault of the designer but the fault of my ears. I cannot use the standard earbuds that come with the iPods and the iPhone either. I always have to buy over-the-ear earphones. I also wear contacts and have a little astigmatism in one eye. Myvu cannot be used with eyeglasses.

Myvu uses patented technology which is very advanced, which they call SolidOptex. VGA resolution (640 x 480) offers DVD-quality experience and claims that their Kopin Cyber Display technology has the highest pixel density and sharpest resolution for its size. It provides 4 hours of viewing on one charge. You can use the eyewear with the iPhone, iPhone 3G, and any iPod that supports video, as well as a Zune, Nokia phones with video-out, digital media and DVD players, camcorders, game systems with composite video-out such as Wii, Xbox, PSP and more.

Nevertheless, in my opinion, you need to have perfect vision, be lying down in bed, and be very still to view a movie with Myvu video eyewear.
