By WolfGang Gunther Background: Photo Editor's comments: Wolfgang tells me that this is an East African Grey Crowned Crane that he photographed at the Hilton Waikaloa Village in Kona Hawaii. It is said that they are excellent for insect control, including fire ants. Although they are not considered an endangered species, their habitat in Africa is increasingly threatened and they are fairly rare in the United States. It can be difficult to breed them in captivity as if they do not form a pair bond, they will not mate.
