Rating: 4.5 out of 5 apples

Dave Cross has compiled the ultimate "How to" book for Adobe Photoshop CS2 with his new book The Photoshop CS2 Help Desk Book. The book addresses the most common questions and problems by providing succinct answers and easy strategies to help avoid problems in the first place.

The book is divided into three sections

  • One: Be Your Own Help Desk,
  • Two: Frequently Asked Questions, and
  • Three: Customizing Photoshop.
The book's illustrations that are both well-chosen and in color.

As expected Section Two makes up the bulk of the book. The questions range from very basic like how to adjust and fix common image problems, to intermediate and at times advanced questions. If a reader uses this book to learn new techniques that have baffled him in the past, he can easily go to advanced status.

The questions are printed in black, with the answers in red. Here's a sample of the type of questions in the book.

Q: What can I do with the Art History tool?
A: The Art History Brush uses a previous state of an image (and settings you specify) to simulate textures of painting with different colors and artistic styles.

Key settings/Issues: Brush size, blending mode, Opacity, Style, Area, and Tolerance.

Keyboard shortcut: Shift-Y

The title of the book is very apropos because it is an excellent reference book for when you get stuck trying to remember how to do something in Photoshop. The excellent Table of Contents gets you where you want to go in no time.

I highly recommend this book to everybody who uses any version of Photoshop, not necessarily just Photoshop CS2.
